  • Results on submit
At a glance

What is a skill-based assessment?

A skill-based assessment is a test built around the specific skills a job, course or certification needs, rather than general knowledge or qualifications. Each skill is tested in its own section and scored separately, so the result shows what a person can do and where they need to improve. On ExamRankers you build these tests from your own question bank, candidates take them in a web browser, and the skill-wise scores are ready the moment they submit.

How it works

From a list of skills to a ranked shortlist

Set up a skill once, then reuse it in every assessment that needs it.

1

List the skills

Write down what the role or course needs, such as spreadsheets, written English or accounting basics.

2

Build the assessment

Add questions for each skill to your question bank, then create a test with one section per skill.

3

Invite candidates

Assign the test to people in their own panel, or share a public link anyone can open without an account.

4

Compare skill by skill

Scores and ranks are ready on submit. Open any attempt to see how the candidate did in each section.

Features

Everything a skill assessment needs

From the first question you write to the certificate a candidate takes away.

Skill sections

One assessment, a section for every skill

Divide a test into sections and give each one the questions for a single skill. Candidates move through the test section by section, and each section is scored on its own.

  • As many sections as the role needs
  • Marks and negative marking set per test
  • A question palette showing what is answered and what is left
  • Mark-for-review, so candidates can come back to a question

Skill bank

A question bank organised by skill

Keep the questions for each skill under their own subject, tagged by difficulty. Build them up once and draw on them for every assessment you run.

  • Import questions from Word, Excel and PDF
  • Let AI draft questions from your own material
  • Easy, medium and hard levels for each skill
  • A solution stored with every question

Question types

Ask the question the way the job would

A skill is rarely just one right option. Mix question types so candidates have to work something out, not only recognise an answer.

  • Single-answer and multiple-answer questions
  • Numerical questions with a typed answer
  • A passage, table or case with a set of questions
  • Images in questions and options
Skill-wise reports

A score for each skill, not just a total

Two candidates with the same total can be very different people. The result breaks the score down by section, so you can see who is strong in the skill you care about most.

  • Overall score and rank among everyone tested
  • Section-wise marks for every attempt
  • Correct, incorrect and skipped counts
  • Question-by-question solutions for the candidate

Delivery

Send it to anyone with a link

Candidates you already know take the test in their own panel. For everyone else, share a public link that opens without an account.

  • Works on a phone, tablet or computer
  • A timer on every test
  • English and Hindi on the same test
  • Your own address and logo

Certificates

Certify the skill once it is proven

Design a certificate in the panel and issue it to the people who earned it. Anyone they show it to can check it is genuine.

  • Design the layout yourself, with your logo
  • A QR code on every certificate
  • A public page that verifies each one
  • Print or save as PDF

Team & roles

Let each expert own their skill

The person who knows a skill best should write its questions. Give every trainer or interviewer their own login, limited to what they need.

  • Separate logins for staff and trainers
  • Choose which sections each person can open
  • Limit a trainer to their assigned courses
  • The owner always keeps full access

Qualifications vs skills

What changes when you test the skill itself

A degree or a CV tells you what someone studied. An assessment tells you what they can do today.

Stage CVs & qualifications Skill-based assessment
What you learn Where someone studied and for how long What they can do, skill by skill
Comparing people CVs written in different ways, read one at a time The same test and the same marking for everyone
Time to shortlist Days of reading applications and phone screens A ranked list as soon as candidates submit
Fairness Depends on who reads the application Objective questions marked automatically
After the result A yes or a no A section-wise breakdown that shows what to work on
Next time Start the screening again from scratch Reuse the same questions and tests
Skills you can assess

Any skill you can write questions for

The question bank is yours, so the assessment covers exactly what your role or course needs.

Arithmetic, data interpretation, logical and analytical reasoning.

Language & communication

Grammar, comprehension and business writing, in English or Hindi.

Computer & office skills

Spreadsheets, word processing, email and everyday digital tools.

Questions

Skill-based assessments, explained

Short answers to what hiring and training teams ask us most before they start testing skills.

The basics

What is a skill-based assessment?
It is a test built around the specific skills a job, course or certification needs. Each skill is tested in its own section and scored separately, so the result shows what a person can do rather than only what they have studied.
Why do skill-based assessments matter?
A CV or a degree shows what someone studied, not whether they can do the work. Testing the skill directly lets you confirm a person is ready for the role or task before you hire, promote or certify them, and every candidate is judged on the same questions.
Which industries use skill-based assessments?
Any field where the work depends on a skill you can test. They are common in IT and software, healthcare, manufacturing, banking and finance, retail and BPO, and in colleges and training institutes preparing students for those jobs.

Building an assessment

Which skills can I assess?
Any skill you can write questions for: numerical and reasoning ability, language, computer and office skills, technical knowledge, job-specific knowledge and compliance topics. The question bank is your own, so the assessment covers exactly what your role needs.
Can a skill-based assessment be customised for my role?
Yes. You choose the skills, write or import the questions for each one, and set the difficulty, duration and marks, so the test matches a particular job, course or industry.
Do I have to write all the questions myself?
No. Questions can be imported in bulk from Word, Excel and PDF files, or drafted by AI from a PDF of your own material. You review every question before it is saved.
Can candidates take the assessment in Hindi?
Yes. A question can carry both English and Hindi versions, and candidates switch between them on the test screen whenever they like.

Running it and reading results

How are skill-based assessments conducted?
Usually online: candidates take the test in a web browser on a phone, tablet or computer and are marked automatically. If you prefer pen and paper, the test paper can be printed and the marks entered afterwards, so online and offline results are kept together.
Do candidates need an account or an app?
No app is needed; the test runs in a web browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Candidates can sign in to their own panel, or you can share a public link that opens without an account.
How quickly are results ready?
Objective questions are marked the moment the test is submitted, including negative marking where you have set it, so the ranked list is ready as soon as candidates finish.
How do I get a score for each skill?
Create the test with one section per skill. When a candidate submits, the result shows the overall score and rank together with the marks for every section.
Can I issue a certificate for a skill?
Yes. You design the certificate in the panel and issue it to the people who earned it. Each one carries a QR code that anyone can scan to verify it.
